WHAT IS A CV AXLE AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

A CV Shaft Assembly may also be referred to as “CV Axle” or “Half-Shaft” or “Axle Shaft Assembly”. The CV axle shaft (axle shaft for short) is a narrow rod like part with joints on either end that is used to transfer rotating power from your car’s transmission to the wheels. Every wheel on your car that is gets power from the transmission is driven by an axle shaft assembly. Your car will have two CV Axles if it is front wheel drive (FWD) or rear wheel drive (RWD), and it will have four CV Axles if it is four wheel drive (4WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Cars with CV axles shafts powering the front wheels will fail most often.

CV Axle shafts are comprised of five components; the shaft itself, a CV joint on each end, grease for the joints, and protective boots (often called CV Boot) to keep the grease contained within the CV joints. Usually, the CV Boot will tear from use and age, thus allowing the grease to escape the CV Joint and allow debris to enter the joint and damage it.
